If you still like your highlights but the shade feels warmer than you want, you may need a color refresh rather than another lightening appointment. That’s where a gloss or toner can help.
The names overlap. Toning adjusts the shade of your hair; a gloss can tone, refresh color, and enhance shine. Some products do all three, so your stylist may use both terms for the same treatment. Redken’s Shades EQ, for example, is a gloss used for toning and refreshing color.
Start with what you want to change
A toning service can soften unwanted warmth or move your color toward a different finish. Blonde hair might look more golden, beige, or cool; brunette hair might need faded color refreshed.
Warmth isn’t automatically something to remove. Honey blonde, caramel, and copper all depend on it. If you like those shades, explain which parts of your color you want to preserve. Our guide to warm, cool, and neutral blonde can help you describe the difference.
For shine without added pigment, a clear gloss may be an option. A tinted gloss changes color as well, so discuss the shade before choosing the service.
Will a gloss make your hair lighter?
A deposit-only gloss adds pigment without lightening your existing hair. It can refine the color of highlights you already have, but it won’t create new highlights or lift dark roots. Products such as Wella Shinefinity are specifically formulated for zero lift.
That distinction matters when booking. “My blonde looks too yellow” and “I want to be much blonder” may require different appointments. If you want more brightness around your face or throughout your hair, describe that goal when arranging your visit.
How long does the result last?
A demi-permanent gloss gradually fades. As one product example, Redken gives a four-to-six-week range for Shades EQ; that isn’t a guarantee for every formula or head of hair. Your washing routine and hair condition also affect how the color wears.
Ask your stylist for a realistic refresh schedule and suitable home care. You may want to maintain a precise cool shade, or you may be comfortable letting the tone soften between appointments.
What should you book at Beauty Culture?
Our service menu lists Quick Tone/Gloss from $50, designed to refresh tone and shine between color appointments. Prices vary by stylist; check the selected service for current pricing and what’s included.
If your goal involves new growth, additional highlights, or a substantial color change, contact the salon before selecting a quick refresh. Color corrections require a consultation.
A recent photo in natural light and one reference photo can help explain what you want. Be specific: “I like the placement of my highlights, but I want less gold” gives your stylist a useful starting point.
