Brazilian Blowout and Other Keratin Smoothing Treatments: How to Compare Your Options

Dark brown shoulder-length hair with a smooth finish and softly curved ends.

If you’re comparing a Brazilian Blowout with a keratin treatment, you’re probably looking for less frizz, easier styling, or a smoother finish. The names can be confusing, though: Brazilian Blowout is a brand of professional smoothing treatments, while “keratin treatment” is a broader description used for several salon products and services.

The best choice comes down to the formula, your hair’s condition, and how you want to wear it. Someone who loves a sleek blowout may want a different result from someone who air-dries their curls and wants to keep plenty of fullness.

Start with how you want your hair to look and feel

Think about an ordinary wash day. Would you like to spend less time blow-drying? Make the hair around your face easier to manage? Keep your curls while reducing frizz? Be clear about what you want to change and what you want to preserve, including movement, volume, and natural texture.

Photos help make that conversation specific. Bring a picture of your hair as you normally wear it alongside your inspiration images. If you usually air-dry, your stylist should know that before recommending a treatment. Our guide to managing frizz while keeping your curls also explores everyday care options.

Consider how long you want the change to last. A blowout provides a temporary styled finish, a conditioning add-on addresses softness and moisture, and a smoothing service is intended to improve manageability beyond a single wash. For an occasion, a regular blowout may be enough; an ongoing struggle with styling calls for a different conversation.

Understand what each formula offers

Even within one brand, treatments can differ. Brazilian Blowout offers Original and FREE, with separate formulas and instructions for suitability, color timing, and aftercare. Keep the full treatment name in your appointment notes, especially if you’ve had smoothing services before. Knowing which product was used makes your history more useful.

Longevity is one practical difference. Brazilian Blowout describes Original as providing smoothing for up to 12 weeks, depending on hair type and home care. Keratin Complex lists up to five months for its NKST treatment and up to three months for KCSMOOTH. These are manufacturer estimates; your stylist can explain what is realistic for your hair. Our guide to how long a Brazilian Blowout lasts looks more closely at maintenance and longevity.

The first few days can differ, too. Original has no waiting period after the service. NKST requires at least 72 hours without wetting the hair, shampooing, clips, or ponytails, while KCSMOOTH allows washing the same day. If you exercise daily or need to wash frequently, those instructions may matter as much as how long the result lasts. These examples illustrate differences between formulas; your chosen stylist can confirm which treatments they offer.

Plan around your hair history and color appointments

Your recent services help determine what your hair is ready for. Share the dates and product names, where known, for color, highlights, lightening, relaxers, perms, and previous smoothing treatments. Mention extensions and their attachment method as well.

Color and smoothing can sometimes happen in one appointment, but the order and spacing matter. Brazilian Blowout Original’s guidance allows color before smoothing on the same day; its FREE formula has different timing instructions. Your stylist should plan the sequence around the chosen product and your hair’s condition, including whether you need separate visits and how much time to reserve.

If your hair is breaking, feels unusually fragile, or has been heavily processed, raise that early. A smoother appearance doesn’t establish that the hair is ready for another chemical or heat service. Its condition needs to be assessed before deciding on the finish.

Know the ingredients and suitability requirements

A smoothing consultation should include a straightforward conversation about the product and its precautions. The FDA explains that some hair-smoothing products release formaldehyde when heated. Exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, and airways and cause other short- and long-term health effects. The ingredient list, Safety Data Sheet, and the salon’s ventilation and application precautions are useful parts of that discussion.

A “formaldehyde-free” label still comes with product-specific requirements. For example, the manufacturer says Brazilian Blowout FREE should not be performed during pregnancy or nursing. Share previous reactions and relevant health concerns before your appointment. If you’re pregnant, nursing, or have a condition that raises questions about exposure, discuss the proposed product with your clinician as well.

You can also decide that chemical smoothing doesn’t suit you and explore a temporary styling option instead.

Choose aftercare that fits your routine

The treatment should make sense for the life you actually lead. Explain how often you wash your hair, whether you work out regularly, and any swimming plans. Your aftercare instructions should cover those habits, along with tying your hair back, styling, and using your usual products.

Get the instructions in writing, including the names of recommended home-care products. That gives you a clear routine to follow and lets you account for any additional cost before choosing the service.

If your hair feels heavier, flatter, or harder to manage than expected, contact your stylist for guidance. Discuss how the result wears over time before scheduling another treatment. A repeat appointment should reflect your hair’s condition, your experience, and the manufacturer’s timing requirements.
