Silk Press vs. Blowout: What’s the Difference?
A silk press and a blowout can both leave your hair smooth, shiny and full of movement. The difference is how that finish is achieved.
A blowout uses a blow-dryer and brush to smooth and shape the hair, often creating volume, bounce and softly curved ends. A silk press takes the process further, using a flat iron after blow-drying to create a sleeker, straighter finish on naturally curly or coily hair.
Neither service permanently straightens your hair. Choosing between them comes down to your natural texture, the look you want and how you plan to maintain it.
At Beauty Culture in Kansas City’s Crossroads District, we offer both. Here’s what to consider before booking.
The look: soft volume or a sleek finish?
If you love hair with lift at the roots, soft bends and plenty of movement, a blowout may be exactly what you’re looking for. Depending on your hair and the technique used, it can create anything from a smooth, polished style to a fuller, more voluminous finish.
A silk press is generally better suited to someone who wants naturally curly or coily hair to look noticeably straighter and smoother. The process typically involves cleansing, conditioning, blow-drying and flat-iron styling.
That doesn’t mean your hair has to be completely flat. A silk press can still have body, movement and softly curved ends. Similarly, a blowout doesn’t have to be big and bouncy.
The distinction is less about choosing one specific hairstyle and more about the techniques needed to achieve it.
Consider what you like about your inspiration photos. Is it the smoothness, the fullness, the shape around the face or the way the ends curve? Those details will help your stylist create a result that feels like you.
Your natural texture makes a difference
Two people can arrive with the same inspiration photo and need entirely different services.
If your hair already dries relatively straight, a blowout may provide all the smoothing and shape you need. Someone with tighter curls or coils may benefit from the additional flat-iron work of a silk press to achieve a similar finish.
Your stylist will also consider your hair’s length, density, condition and previous treatments.
If you’re unsure which service is appropriate, share a current photo showing your natural texture alongside the look you want. A picture of your hair before styling can be especially helpful.
Be specific about which elements of the inspiration you want to recreate. You might love the rounded ends but prefer to keep your current length, or want the face-framing shape without changing your color. That helps separate styling goals from services that would require a haircut or color appointment.
And if your goal is simply to stretch your natural texture before braids or another style, mention that too. A preparation service may be more appropriate than a complete blowout or silk press.
What about heat and hair health?
Both services use heat, although a silk press typically involves an additional flat-iron step.
Some blowouts also include finishing touches with a flat iron or curling iron. Because techniques vary, the service name alone doesn’t tell you exactly how much heat will be used.
The American Academy of Dermatology cautions that excessive heat can damage hair. Your stylist should consider your hair’s condition, including previous coloring, lightening, chemical treatments and heat exposure, before deciding on the best approach.
There’s no single temperature setting that’s right for everyone. The goal is to achieve your desired finish while avoiding unnecessary heat.
If your hair is fragile, previously damaged or struggling to retain its natural curl pattern, bring that up before the service. Your stylist can assess whether the look is appropriate and discuss alternatives when needed.
The most useful question isn’t which service uses the lowest temperature. It’s which technique can achieve the look you want while respecting your hair’s current condition.
How much does a silk press or blowout cost?
Beauty Culture’s current service menu lists the following starting prices:
Service Starting price
Blowout From $55
Silk press From $60
Starting prices verified October 11, 2026. Pricing varies by stylist.
Although the starting prices are only $5 apart, these are separate services rather than interchangeable appointments. A silk press isn’t automatically a $5 upgrade to a blowout.
Before booking, check what’s included in your selected service. Cleansing, conditioning, detangling and finishing techniques may affect the time and total cost. Your hair’s length and density can also influence the appointment.
If you’d like a trim, deep-conditioning treatment or additional styling, ask whether it needs to be booked separately.
You can explore our services and starting prices, then confirm the total with your stylist before your appointment.
Which style will work better with your routine?
The finish you want is important, but so is what happens after you leave the salon.
If you work out regularly, spend time outdoors or frequently encounter humidity, consider how those activities may affect your style. Sweat and moisture can cause straightened hair to begin returning toward its natural texture.
Think about your nighttime routine as well. Some styles benefit from wrapping or other protective techniques, and your stylist can demonstrate an approach suited to your hair. If you prefer minimal maintenance in the morning, mention that when discussing your options.
Neither service has a guaranteed lifespan. How long the results hold depends on your hair, your environment and the care you give it afterward.
For more detailed expectations, read our guide to how long a silk press lasts.
If you’re getting your hair done for a wedding, photos, dinner or another special occasion, consider scheduling closer to the event. Share when you need to be ready, especially if you’ll be traveling or changing afterward, so your appointment can fit comfortably into your plans.
You also don’t need to commit to regular appointments just because you enjoy the result. A silk press or blowout can be a lovely change for one occasion. If you prefer wearing your hair straight more often, discuss a schedule with your stylist that accounts for your hair’s condition and the amount of heat styling involved.
